Bernie Ecclestone is once again shaking Formula 1’s foundations. The executive director admitted the possibility of two builders with the highest symbolism in Formula 1 to be leaving: Ferrari and Mercedes.
“It can happen that Mercedes and Ferrari leave. But if the racing is good, maybe that’s not such a horrible thing. We should wait so that the other builders can leave” confessed Ecclestone to Auto Moto und Sport.
“Mercedes will leave whenever it’s more convenient for them”, said without showing much worries. “That already happened with Honda, BMW, Toyota, etc. They leave when they’re already tired of Formula 1, there’s no gratitude”, said.
Also leaving seems to be the Singapore Grand Prix, the first made at night. “Grand Prix costed too much money for Singapore, but they also earned a lot of money as well. Before they were only another airport”, said the British.
Ecclestone recognizes that is not very happy regarding this season, specially due to lack of competition. “Mercedes did a good job and deserves all the success, but we all prefer the racings where anyone can win. Nowadays we already know who is going to win unless something unpredictable happens”, says.
For the next season he doesn’t expect that Red Bull improves so much in quality to be able to reach Mercedes: “If Red Bull believes that can beat Mercedes with a better aerodynamic, then I ask why aren’t they secure of that? Mercedes can also improve their aerodynamics”.
