Device must be placed in the bumper zone
General Motors has patented an exterior airbag to protect pedestrians from clashing with car fronts.
“The airbag for pedestrian protection can become an important solution in the future”, said Tom Wilkerson, a spokesman for GM safety issues, USA Today reports.
Many pedestrian deaths in run-downs happened not because of the first collision with the vehicle but for the second impact with the car in a moment of fall. This fact gave special attention to this exterior airbaig.
According to the US newspaper, GM submitted extensive documentation to the US Patent Entity including 90 technical sketches. The center of attention will be in an airbag located in a “bumper zone” next to the hood and before the doors “to promote the protection of a crash pedestrian in the front zone of the structure”.
“It’s a promising technology, but we do not have any specific production plans yet,” added spokesman Patrick Morrissey.
